Day 19-20 Port Nelson to Grande Prairie

Day 19-20 Port Nelson to Grande Prairie Awful day today, raining and miserable. The scenery is changing now very quick, it is more like Europe and Australia in some part, the road is sometime good sometime bad, the traffic too is starting to get heavy, many big trucks. I hit something on the road and lost the spring on my side stand. I had to stop for a few minutes and ride hard to catch up.  About 20 minutes down the road I saw this car similar to Rodney’s pulling in front of me, I followed for a about 1 k and the car turned on the right in a little road, I thought that was strange as the … Continue reading

Day 18 Watson Lake to Port Nelson

Day 18 Watson Lake to Port Nelson We left early, before breakfast as we had a 650k day. By 9 am we where already 150 k away and it was time for Breakfast, Paul was happy, eggs sunny side up, bacon, potatoes, toast and jam a real bargain, the coffee was bad but so much food in his plate he didn’t mind. The weather was sunny but crisp, and by 11 it was quiet warm, Rodney stopped more bears, then Buffalos and mountain sheep. The last time we stopped for buffalo I got a bit to close (see the photo Rodney took) and soon I was back on my bike speeding away. After awhile you don’t stop anymore it is … Continue reading

Day 17 Watson Lake

Day 17 Watson Lake Yes, the name say it all, a lake. About 500k from Whitehorse, Rodney say, is a nice little town with a beautiful lake. We didn’t argue as Rodney is in charge of making the reservation for accommodation. He say to Paul, Michel will be happy only $95 for the room, maybe we should try to get 3 bed in the room Michel will be even more happy he say to Paul. This place was unreal the façade you see on the picture is only a façade , like in a movie set,. The real motel is the picture where you see my motorbike. As we came in, Rodney say, not too bad….for the price …then he … Continue reading

Day 16 Whitehorse

Day 16 Whitehorse We decided to have a rest day in Whitehorse, no I should say they decided, as Rodney find a place with good beer and Paul find a place with good espresso, so just to shut them up I agree, and then that was the museum Paul wanted to go too… As I had a few adjustments to do on the bike I took the opportunity to go to the Harley shop and talk to someone about it. Did you ever go to a shop ask for something and they tell you no problem, well not me. The manager looked at the bike calls the mechanic shake his head and say -Oh very hard- (See photo) I know … Continue reading

Day 15 Skagway to Whitehorse

Day 15 Skagway to Whitehorse Rodney suggested this morning we spend more time taking shots for a movie we like to do of out travel, Paul was looking for a place to go for breakfast and already trying to find out about a good place 200k down the road for lunch. Now, if I want to do a movie I would go and ride my bike in Hollywood and if I wanted to stuff myself all day I would go on a cruise all included. My idea of a motorbike bike Holliday is to ride the motorbike all day. As we arrived in Whitehorse Paul suggested going to the Dinosaur museum. Yes we say of course you can go by yourself. … Continue reading

Day 14 Haines to Skaway

Day 14 Haines to Skagway What a difference a day can make, as we left Haines Junction, Rodney decided to put his movie camera on the bonnet of the car: well, then, it started raining and raining and raining and cold, it got down to 7 degrees and as you can see in one of the photos the river on our left was frozen: and we supposed to smile for the camera, bugger that let’s get out of here as soon as possible. It reminded me of my younger years in France when we use stay on the side of the road waiting for the snow to stop, falling a sleep siting on the bike, and waking up in the … Continue reading

Day 13 crossing into Canada

Day 13 Alaska to Canada I didn’t think today would be an interesting day, but about 100k  pass Fairbanks Rodney spotted a Huge Moose. She was standing there minding her business, already a couple of car stopped to take photos but as soon as we arrived with our noisy bike she bolted away. She was standing in front of Rodney’s car much higher than the bonnet. Then a couple hundred kilometers later, Rodney again, spotted a bear.(He is a good spotter this Rodney) This bear was eating something (look like fingers)on the side of the road and again he bolted away as soon as we arrived with the bikes. Bike is not a good vehicle to go spotting Bears and … Continue reading

Day 12 Coldfoot Dalton Hwy (2)

Not very far is the town of Wiseman located twelve miles north of Coldfoot, was the farthest north gold mining camp in North America. It became home to many Coldfoot residents after large quantities of gold were discovered in the creeks in 1907. The town boomed from 1911 to 1915. After that, mining activity significantly tapered off, and much of the population moved away. Unlike Coldfoot, the town of Wiseman has been continuously occupied throughout the years. Current residents are self-reliant and independent and use traditional self-sufficiency skills to supply their basic needs off the land. Then we board our plane a little Navaho, twin engine and very confortable for a small plane. We flew over the Anaktuvuk Pass. This … Continue reading

day 12 Coldfoot Dalton Hwy (1)

Day 12 Cold foot (1) As expected we waked up at 4am to be on the road by 5am We were lucky this time, we had a mini bus and only 2 other persons with us. Our driver Aaron, was full of knowledge, like if we cared at 5 am… With us was a very nice Australian couple from Inverell, she is a teacher and he a district director.  I knew then it would be a hard day at the office, not too many jokes today. 1st stop was Livengood. The boomtown of Livengood sprang up in 1914 following Jay Livengood and N.R. Hudson’s discovery of gold on Livengood Creek. By 1916 twenty-one mines were in operation, and Livengood boasted … Continue reading
